THE JAMES P. WILMOT CANCER
CENTER FUND RAISER SPONSORED BY JAMES "SMITTY" SMITH RESEARCH
SAVES LIVES EVENT DAY WAS
JULY 22, 2006 HELD AT THE MAPLE CITY BOWLING
CENTER
Smitty as he is
affectionately know as by his friends was diagnosed with cancer in
early 2005. He began taking chemotherapy
soon there after at Strong Memorial
Hospital in Rochester New York. After many
months of chemo treatments he was
determined to be cancer free. It was at this time his doctors
told him that they felt his chances
for no reoccurrence would be greatly enhanced if he where to have a
stem cell transplant. Now this
meant more chemo treatments. Treatments that would be
harder & more difficult then those he
previously had . It also meant destroying his immune system
& having to build a new immune system
basically from scratch. Smitty forever being the
fighter & optimist decided, "this is the
right thing to do". So on St. Patrick's Day of 2006 the
transplant was done & Smitty began a
"new birth" if you will. The transplant went remarkably
well. And so having counted his many
blessings & good fortunes he unselfishly wanted to help
those cancer patients who would follow
in his similar footsteps. And so that is how theJames P. Wilmot
Cancer Center fund raiser was born.
